Well, we decided to play with the idea of a Tesla truck and what it might look like. Of course, no one outside of Tesla has any solid proof or knowledge of the details of the truck, so this is pure speculation. Still, it’s a fun topic to throw around.

Tesla is currently working to fulfill the orders of the model X SUV while preparing the next Model 3 sedan for its official launch. Apart from expanding its network of superchargers across the country, Tesla’s agenda seems free after Model 3 reaches the innings sometime in 2017. That leaves room for the fully electric automaker to take the pickup truck segment. But why a truck, ask? Well, the segment is experiencing impressive growth, especially in the middle-sized class. Jumping into battle could mean big profits for Tesla.

Obviously, the production of a truck presents a number of engineering challenges not facing the sedans or crossover. In order to be competitive, the Tesla truck will have to offer a respectable towing and hauling capacity, maintaining a range of decent batteries, have the ability to traverse rough terrain, and yet maintain a similar battery range as the Model X when downloading. No doubt Tesla’s engineers will be tested.

Tesla’s pickup will probably share parts with the X-model – it only makes sense. However, we are not expecting Tesla to pull an old school GM and just slap a pickup bed instead of the loading area of his SUV. Rather, Tesla would be prudent to give his van a familiar but distinctive look, to separate it from the X-model, but still undeniably Tesla. When compared from side to side, the truck and the model X share a similar general shape in front of the B pillars, but the truck has a higher posture with more pronounced mudguards and a more rugged lower fascia. These are the signals that help to define the “van” of the vehicle.

Behind the B-pillar, the back doors drop the hawk’s wings in favor of a more conventional style. The C-pillar then mixes well from the ceiling down into the load bed, making the transition between the cabin and the bed more stylistic. In fact, the Honda filo design influenced our decision for this style feature. After all, both trucks would ride in a reinforced unibody chassis.

The chrome trim around the windows and the Tesla signature door handles will help to clear up the side profile of the truck. The black edging around the bottom of the truck will help protect the paint from rocks and mud while perpetuating that rugged appearance. We may be familiar with wheel options such as wheel-type cylinders. Tire options will be more aggressive in other parts of Tesla’s range.

We do not know what Tesla planned for the cargo bed. However, I claim that ridgeline will serve as a guide for Tesla’s designers. We expect to see the smallest load, the modular attachments, and even the creative ways of using the various power plugs. Tesla will probably offer a tonneau casing as a standard equipment, helping to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the truck.

We did not expect anything less than the high caliber interior of Tesla, perhaps a slightly modified version of the Model X cabin. The cube sporty seats, a minimalist instrument panel with a massive touch screen, and a fully digital gauge cluster for the driver are highly probable. Tesla could pull a surprise with a foldable back bench seat, or perhaps bucket seats attached to the rear bulkhead with open storage under. Those bucket seats also could bend up flat against the rear wall to haul larger items.

Like the X-model, the Tesla pickup will probably have a large windshield that is removed as a hairline that recedes.

Tesla will surely give his truck customers options when choosing an electric propellant. The X model offers four options, which include the 60D, 75D, 90D, and the extravagant P90D. For the service of trucks, however, we bet that the base 60D will be omitted. That leaves three possible options if Tesla follows the model X as an example.

The Model X 75D offers 237 miles of electric driving range with a time of 0 to 60 mph of six seconds. The maximum power is rated at 328 and the torque reaches 387 ft. lbs. Those are similar numbers to the Chevrolet Silverado when equipped with the 5.3-Liter V-8.

The 90D has an increased reach, totaling 257 miles. Its time from 0 to 60 mph takes place in just 4.8 seconds thanks to a maximum of 417 hp and 485 pound-feet of torque. Opting for the P90D brings an impressive 532 horsepower in ridiculous mode with a huge 713 pound-foot pair. That’s enough to push the X model to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. The maximum speed is listed at 155 mph for the P90D and 90D, while the 75D is topped to 130 mph.

What’s more, each battery option comes standard with all-wheel drive. This will be of great value in the pick-up market, allowing customers the confidence to cope with a slippery boat ramp or a snow-covered dirt road in winter.

Speaking of trailer, Tesla pickup will surely be based on the 5,000-pound towing capacity of the X-model. Perhaps with the adaptation of the suspension and an integrated trailer brake system, the pickup truck could pull up to 7,000 pounds.

The prices will be interesting to follow. Will Tesla push the pickup market, so it is a luxury item comparable to the X model, or would it reduce the price more in line with the current average size pickups of the vans? Only time will tell, but we would be in a slight reduction in cost over the model X. The truck will not be the money from Model 3, but Tesla cannot be the price of a customer base.

That suggests that the Tesla truck will have a starting price of about $50,000. That’s $18,000 less expensive than the X model but far above the estimated $35,000 price of starting for Model 3. Of course, the price will accordingly increase with the most powerful battery options.
